  1. Agreed, Matic and Garay have been the players of the season for me this year! Although, I can’t say I have any complaints about the squad as a whole. It’s great that everyone seems to be on the same wavelength this season, and completely focused on their objectives. This has been the difference – for me – between this squad and previous Benfica squads.

    Looking forward to the next installment guys! Especially some further debate on the “Bento issue”. 😉

  2. Thanks Chavelha… comments really mean a lot as none of us are full time yet in the sports we love.. Tom has gotten some great work for ESPN & such.. but everyone that helps with PortuGOAL trully does it for love.. and it is comments like yours here and on the site.. that drive us forward to give back.   3. Thanks for the comments as bc… Emerson who was forced upon us a season was definitely not my fav… but he was JJ’s guy and I railed against him all year.. but Mal has got huge help this season from Garay.. who has been a monster on the left.

    Matic has made a huge difference this year.. even tho he is a box to box… he is a much better DM than Javi ever was and with his speed he supports Garay well in JJ’s super attacking squad.. where they are almost 2-2-6 at times… Thanks for commenting

  5. I agree for the most part what Orlando has to say, as a fellow Benfiquista. I’m not 100% convinced by Melgarejo either.
    HOWEVER: 1) I have never felt more uncomfortable with our defense than during the days with Emerson. The guy couldn’t pass, control, or stop players worth a damn. Melga isn’t great either, but he’s definitely better than Emerson. Myself, I’m a Luisinho fan.
    2) Melgarejo scored a decent goal against Gil Vicente (that’s an excusable miss though)
