NANI ENJOYING AT UNITED
Portuguese star Nani has said that he is enjoying his best ever season at Manchester United, but does not want to be compared with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Both are Portuguese internationals, both began their careers at Sporting Lisbon before joining United and both are lithe, skilful players who favour their right feet but are capable of playing on both sides of the pitch. At 24, two years Ronaldo's junior, Nani is beginning to shown signs of the consistency that catapulted his Portugal team-mate to the international superstardom he currently enjoys.
CARLOS WILL COACH IRANIAN FOOTBALL TEAM
Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz has said that he is more than willing to coach the Iranian football team. He said that Queiroz also announced the names of his aides. One of them is former Portuguese player António Simões.
He said that IFF plans to sign a contract with the Portuguese coach by the end of the week.
Earlier, the website sport360.com reported that Queiroz will be a head coach of the Iranian national team by concluding the three-year-agreement worth $6 million.
Carlos Queiroz visited Tehran where he held talks with official representatives of the Iranian team.
TIAGO ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Portugal midfielder Tiago has announced that that he will be retiring from international football with immediate effect. The 29-year-old, currently on loan from Juventus to Atletico Madrid, made his international debut in a friendly against Scotland in 2002 and went on to earn 58 caps and score three goals for Portugal.
In a letter published on the FPF website (www.fpf.pt), Tiago said the move was also designed to "make room for opportunities for younger players" in the Portugal team.
FIFA WARNS PORTUGAL
FIFA has warned the actions of Portugal national football Association by saying that penalties could be imposed. FIFA says it has expressed "astonishment and concern" that Portuguese officials have not yet adopted FIFA-approved guidelines on how to conduct internal elections.
The two sides met Tuesday at FIFA headquarters.
FIFA has now issued a statement urging the Portugal federation to approve new voting rules at a general assembly, then hold elections that meet the governing body's standards.
PORTUGAL TO PLAY ARGENTINA
Argentina and Portugal are set to play against each other at Emirates Stadium in two months. The high-profile fixture is likely to feature some of football's biggest names, such as Argentina's Lionel Messi and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo.
It is set to be the first of two games in north London in quick succession for Messi, as Arsenal host Barcelona in the Champions League on 16 February.
Both national teams have played once before at the stadium.
PORTUGAL BID WITH SPAIN
Portugal have submitted a joint bid with Spain for the World Cup 2018. Two countries that are united geographically, by customs, interests and traditions have joined forces in order to become the hosts for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup. Spain and Portugal are working together on the joint proposal that constitutes the Iberian Bid for the World Cup.
MOURINHO RULES OUT PORTUGAL JOB
Jose Mourinho has denied the speculation that he will be the next Portugal coach. "As Portuguese, I am always in accord and have a good feeling with the coach (selected), whether it be Paulo Bento or someone else," said Mourinho. "I would always lend out my support, as in this case I am not a coach, but Portuguese (supporter)."
Mourinho added that he has no right to push his employers in persuading them to let him take the job with the FPF on an interim basis and, now that Real have made their feelings clear, no longer wants to speak about the issue.
FERREIRA RETIRES
Chelsea & Portugal defender Paulo Ferreira has confirmed his retirement from international football. Ferreira, 31, told the Portuguese Football Federation of his decision on Monday to call time on his eight-year international career. During that time, he picked up 62 caps and played at two European Championships and two World Cups.
The full-back has appeared in Chelsea's opening games this season after injury concerns for Branislav Ivanovic. The ex-Porto man will now concentrate on his club duties as the Blues look to build on last season's FA Cup and Premier League success.
